Seismic processing for optimized imaging focuses on the preservation of signal to ensure reflected events
and subtleties of structure are fully retained and contribute to the final image. Preservation of signal at each stage in processing requires a balanced and ‘light-touch’ approach to ensure that no signal is inadvertently lost through over application of noise attenuation processing.
As a result, compromises may be made and pre-stack gathers may retain some noise contamination.
However, instances of residual noise are greatly mitigated through the stacking process and this approach offers
the best imaging outcome for accurate structural interpretation.
In contrast, where the objective is to carry out analysis of pre-stack gathers to identify amplitude variations
with offset (AVO) or angle (AVA), clean uncontaminated and flat gathers are a priority.
For this reason pre-stack data taken directly from projects where the main objective is structural imaging,
may not be immediately ready for amplitude analysis and interpretation.
To provide gather data suitable for AVO/AVA analysis, specialized gather conditioning steps are first applied
to remove residual noise and multiple contamination and to correct for remaining normal moveout effects.
